Castle Sinclair Girnigoe - a Castle built on Rock

by Siobhan Fraser - 12:18 on 19 June 2016

I've studied geology for some time but it's not until you get out and experience it that it becomes more real, just as in this image.  First of all, this picture came about by accident, I didn't expect to see such fantastic geology when I set out in the morning.   I had heard of Castle Sinclair Girnigoe about a year ago and had made a note that I must visit it.  It was a ruined castle just outside of Wick in Caithness, set in a dramatic location.  What I didn't expect to see were fantastic layered seastacks and a cliff-edge of excellent layering.  I just thought I was going to see a castle.  Look at the detail of the horizontal layers of the bedrock which then seem to just merge into the rock that the castle is build on.
