Basalt Ain’t Boring

by Siobhan Fraser - 16:58 on 16 November 2015

I took this photo inside Fingal’s Cave on a visit to Staffa.  I find this spectacular on so many different levels.  First, the actual structure of Staffa – about 60 million years ago there was a large basalt lava flow.  As this basalt lava cooled it contacted, and formed these 6-sided columns.  Second, grey ain’t boring either!  Have a closer look.  On the lower right hand side you will see pinks, red and orange tinges.  On the left hand side there are turquoises/blue and green tinges.  A real mix of colour!
